Penelope Cruz
"The most important lesson I've learned in this business is how to say no. I have said no to a lot of temptations, and I am glad I did." -Penelope Cruz
biography
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid, Spain, on April, 28, 1974. Raised along with brother Eduardo and sister Monica, Penelope was always fond of the arts, particularly ballet and jazz dancing. Her passion for dance led to her decision to abandon traditional schooling, focusing her time and energy instead on the graceful art of classical ballet.
"Pe," as she is nicknamed, may not have her high school diploma, but she is very much educated. Before making the transition to acting, Penelope had completed nine years of classical ballet training, three years of Spanish ballet training and four years of theater at Cristina Rota's New York school.
penelope cruz in belle epoque
Penelope Cruz's big break in Spanish film came in 1992's Jamon, jamon. 1992 also witnessed her first foray onto international screens, with her role in Belle epoque -- a massive success that garnered eight Goya Awards (Spanish Oscars), as well as an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It was with Belle epoque that Penelope's star power received its first worldwide exposure.
penelope breaks into american films
After starring in other Spanish films such as Alegre ma non troppo (1994) and La Celestina (1996), Penelope resurfaced in America again in Abre los ojos (a.k.a. Open Your Eyes), which screened at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. Penelope took on a few English-language films in the late '90s, but it was a production from her native land that finally launched her into the spotlight.
Pedro Almodvar's Todo sobre mi madre (1999) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews, then went on to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Penelope stood out in this project as a pregnant nun, and shortly thereafter made her American film debut with Woman on Top (2000).
Next, Penelope starred alongside Matt Damon in All the Pretty Horses (2000). This movie flopped, but that didn't hinder Penelope's rise to fame.
penelope in blow and vanilla sky
2001's Blow, starring Johnny Depp, wasn't a commercial hit, but both projects gave Penelope the visibility she needed at the time. It was her role in Vanilla Sky that same year that catapulted her into the spotlight.
Vanilla Sky was an American adaptation of 1997's Abre los ojos, and while Penelope played the same character, Tom Cruise replaced the Spanish leading man. By the time the film was released, word had spread that Tom and Penelope were an item, hot off the heels of Tom's separation from Nicole Kidman.
penelope cruz in gothika and sahara
2003 saw Penelope alongside Halle Berry in Gothika and a host of talent that should have known better in Bob Dylan's vanity-disaster, Masked and Anonymous.
In 2004, Penelope took on roles in Chazz Palminteri's Noel and with Charlize Theron in Head in the Clouds. She was also cast opposite Matthew McConaughey (one of her many costars-turned-boyfriends) in Sahara (2005).
In 2005, she added Chromophobia, Bandidas (with Salma Hayek) and Tu vida en 65 minutos to her resume. She was also cast in Pedro Almodvar's Volver (2006) which won her a Golden Globe nomination.
Penelope cruz's charities
Extremely active in social causes, Penelope has volunteered for NGOs overseas and donated her proceedings from certain films to charities. She also likes to keep stray cats.
Alicia Silverstone
Alicia (pronounced Uh-liss-ee-uh) Silverstone was born on October 4, 1976 in San Francisco, California. The daughter of Monty, a real estate investor and financial consultant, and Didi, a former airline stewardess, Silverstone traveled to England with her family during summer vacations to visit relatives.
Silverstone's time in the spotlight began as a model at the age of 6, after her father began taking pictures of her to submit to modeling agencies. Although her heart was really in acting, Silverstone landed several modeling gigs for companies such as Levi's Dockers and Marshalls. The modeling jobs led to television commercials -- such as a spot in a Domino's Pizza ad -- which eventually led to appearances on sitcoms, most notably as a "dream girl" in The Wonder Years in 1992.
alicia silverstone in the crush
In 1993, Alicia Silverstone finally landed her first starring role in a feature film, entitled The Crush. Playing a teenager obsessed with an older man, Silverstone refused to pose nude in the film and a body double was hired for "behind" shots. Actually, Silverstone refuses to pose nude to this day. The film -- dubbed a Fatal Attraction for teenagers -- was a hit and earned Silverstone MTV Movie Awards for Best Villain and Best Breakthrough Performance in 1994. A couple of made-for-TV movies followed, namely Torch Song and Scattered Dreams, which were both released in 1993.
alicia silverstone is the aerosmith chick
Marty Callner, the director of the Aerosmith videos, caught Silverstone's performance in The Crush and knew she would be perfect for the Aerosmith video "Cryin'." This was to be the first of a now famous trilogy of Aerosmith videos, as Silverstone was also cast in those for "Crazy" and "Amazing" (co-starring Steven Tyler's daughter, Liv Tyler). When "Cryin'" was released, it was voted the No. 1 video of all time on MTV.
alicia silverstone stars in clueless
Before hitting it big with the sleeper hit of 1995, Clueless, Silverstone worked on three other films that were released in 1995: Hideaway, The Babysitter and Le Nouveau Monde. But it was Silverstone's role as spoiled rich girl Cher Horowitz in Clueless that launched her career.
This movie, a '90s version of Emma, earned Silverstone many awards, including the American Comedy Award for Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture, The National Board of Review of Motion Picture Award for Best Breakthrough Performer, the Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite Female Newcomer, as well as the MTV Movie Awards for Best Female Performance and Most Desirable Female. In 1996, Alicia appeared in True Crime.
After the success of Clueless, Barry Josephson of Columbia Pictures signed Silverstone to a $10 million three-picture deal, the first of which was Excess Baggage (1997). Silverstone not only starred in the film, but it was also the first film produced by her company, First Kiss Productions. Unfortunately, Excess Baggage did not enjoy the same box-office numbers as Clueless.
alicia silverstone does batman & robin
Silverstone's next film role was as Batgirl in Batman & Robin (1997), the fourth release of the Batman series. Batman & Robin did, on the other hand, attract moviegoers. In 1999, things started to pick up for Silverstone, as her role in the romantic comedy Blast from the Past was more impressive and reminiscent of the Silverstone audiences saw in Clueless.
Silverstone was next seen in the summer release Love's Labour's Lost (2000), directed by Kenneth Branagh (whom she was rumored to have been dating; Alicia denies the rumors). She took lessons for her part in the musical adaptation of the William Shakespeare play.
In 2001, she produced the animated family television series Braceface, a project to which she also lent her voice. Then she starred in Rock My World (2002) and the crime comedy Scorched (2003), alongside Rachael Leigh Cook and Woody Harrelson. In the meantime, Alicia proved she could do theater work by touring North America in 2002 with a production of The Graduate, sharing the stage with Kathleen Turner and Jason Biggs.
alicia silverstone in miss match
Seemingly out of the spotlight for a while, she made a comeback in the fall of 2003 with a starring role in the NBC series Miss Match, earning her a Golden Globe nomination. Although the show won a lot of acclaim, it was canceled after only one season. Recently, she padded her resume with Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Silence Becomes You (2004), Beauty Shop (2005), and she acted alongside Ewan McGregor in 2006's Stormbreaker.
The owner of many dogs, Silverstone is actively involved with several animal rights groups, such as The Ark Trust and PETA.

Kate Winslet
Kate Elizabeth Winslet, born 5 October 1975, is a BAFTA Award-winning English actress. She is noted for having played a wide range of diverse characters over her career. Though her best known role may be that of Rose DeWitt Bukater in the highest-grossing film of all time, Titanic (1997), she was also highly regarded for her first role as Juliet Hulme in Heavenly Creatures (1994).
Although Winslet has not won an Academy Award, she has been highly favoured by the Academy, and holds two records in that area: the youngest person to receive two Oscar nominations, and the most Oscar nominations of any actor before the age of 30 (having received a total of four nominations by that age). In addition, there have been only two occasions where two actors playing the same character in the same film have both been nominated for an Oscar; Winslet was a nominee in both instances (for "Titanic" and "Iris").
On November 22, 1998, Winslet married director Jim Threapleton. The two have a daughter, Mia Honey, who was born on October 12, 2000. After a divorce in 2001, Winslet began a relationship with director Sam Mendes, whom she married on May 24, 2003, on the island of Anguilla in the Caribbean. Their son, Joe Alfie, was born on December 22, 2003.
The media, particularly in England, have enthusiastically documented her weight fluctuations over the years. Winslet has been outspoken about her refusal to lose weight in order to conform to the Hollywood ideal. In February 2003, the British edition of GQ magazine published photographs of Winslet which had been digitally enhanced to make her look dramatically thinner than she really was; Winslet issued a statement saying that the alterations were made without her consent.
She has exceptionally big feet which she claims to have inherited from her mother. (She was bullied and teased about them as a child, as well as for being obese). Her feet are so big in fact (size US 11, although she is only 5'6" 1/2 tall) that she mostly wears heavy-duty men's workboots. She claims she likes wearing them since they make her feel as though her feet are "firmly on the ground".
"Demanded" the role of Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic, insisting to director James Cameron, "I am Rose. I don't even know why you're seeing anyone else!"
Is good friends with actress Emma Thompson and has been since they filmed Sense and Sensibility together. Thompson said that if Winslet slimmed herself down to movie-star shape, Thompson would never speak to her again.
Winslet has earned four Oscar nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, as well as one BAFTA Award and three further BAFTA nominations. Premiere Magazine named her performance as Clementine Kruczynski in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind the 81st greatest film performance of all time.
She has also received numerous awards and nominations from other organizations, including the Screen Actors Guild and the Evening Standard British Film Awards.
Winslet won the Los Angeles Film Critics' Association (LAFCA) award for Best Supporting Actress for Iris. For Holy Smoke!, she was Best Actress runner-up at both the New York Film Critics' Circle (NYFCC) and the National Society of Film Critics (NSFC). Winslet was also NYFCC's Best Actress runner-up for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

This year of Google blogging
Posted by Karen Wickre, Google Blog team
It's that time again, the end of a year - time to tote up Google's blogging activity for the last 365 days. First, a few bits of data about this particular blog:
The posts that elicited the most reaction in terms of views and linkbacks include:
- the much-discussed "Gphone" news
- our thinking about the upcoming FCC spectrum auction
- what the OpenSocial APIs could mean
- how a black screen might not save energy
- announcing the Knol test project
- building your own Google homepage
Of course, there's more than business to write about. We celebrated National Gorilla Suit Day, deconstructed the Valentine's Day doodle, and then a snake went missing.
As for the Google family of blogs, there's been lots of growth this year: 42 new ones launched, for a total to 83 active company blogs. Increasingly, Googlers want to quickly and regularly convey product news and updates to various constituents, and blogs are a great way to do that. Among the most popular of this newest crop are the Gmail blog (nearly 1.5 million unique visitors), the Orkut blogs (in English - 3.5 million uniques; and Portuguese - 8.8 million), and Google Lat Long, with 824,000 unique visitors, which covers everything geographical. In addition, readers can now turn to new product blogs including those for Google Finance, Google News, and Mobile. Reflecting keen interest in activity outside the U.S., the YouTube blog had the greatest number of comments for its June post about the fact that YouTube is available in 9 more countries, followed by the August post announcing InVideo ads.
On the ads side: there are now 6 more non-English blogs for AdSense publishers (French, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Chinese). The AdWords team opened blogs for Brasil and the Netherlands, Japan now has its own Analytics blog, and there are now German and Chinese versions of the popular Webmaster Central. (The most popular ads-related blog is the one for Analytics, with nearly half a million unique visitors, followed by closely Inside AdSense and then Inside AdWords.)
To keep current and share their work, developers got a raft of new blogs, too, including those focused on APIs for YouTube, Checkout, Gears, Mashup, and Gadgets. Needless to say, there are now also blogs for Android and OpenSocial.
Two new country blogs, for the Czech Republic and Australia, went public, to talk about all things Google in their regions. Yet more readers congregated around the new Public Policy and Google.org blogs, as well as one dedicated to online security and malware.
Despite all this activity, and the fact that a growing number of companies also host corporate blogs, the Fortune 500 Business Blogging Wiki (a collaborative project begun by Wired Magazine and SocialText) indicates that even today, just 46 of the Fortune 500 companies (about 9%), have active public blogs produced by company employees that focus on the company and its products. Let's hope in 2008 that number goes up. We think such blogs can serve users, journalists, critics, investors, and fans more effectively and directly than more traditional approaches. Apparently, so do 41,395,926 people around the world - the number of visitors to all of our blogs this year.

Party Planning
I can't believe that 2007 is coming to a close, so much to be thankful for this past year! And so much to reflect on for the coming year. If you are planning a New Years Party here are some tips on staying organized (this also works for basically any party you might be planning):
- Make a list of everything that has to get done (including your menu for the party)
- On that list note the times that things need to cooked or started or placed in the oven (for instance - make crab dip AM, put quiche in the oven 6:30)
- Have the drinks out already so you don't have to fumble in the kitchen for drinks for everyone all night
- Make sure your champagne is chilled and ready to go
- Know where your champagne flutes are in advance or have them out already
- Make sure you have enough forks, paper goods, ice - ect. before your party begins
- And be ready an hour before your first guest. (this way you can be finishing up in the kitchen when the arrive, not blow drying your hair)
And don't forget to have fun! It's a party after all! (Oh and drink responsibly!!! It's not you I am worried about, it's the other guys!)
Happy New Year Everyone!

Tattoos I Know: Erika's Ink (Part 2)
This is part 2 of Erika's ink (part 1 here). Erika has a lot of tattoos, so I had to split the post, since she generously offered them all up for Tattoosday.
Tattoo #7 is actually #7 and #13, as one element was added eight years later. We'll focus on #7 now, which is the flower on the inside of Erika's left wrist.
Erika, in her own words, went through what she calls "an experimental phase" in her life, during which she began dating women. To show her "true colors" at the time, Erika and her cousin, who was also dating women, got the same tattoo...a rainbow-petaled flower above a doubled female sign, to proudly display her alternate lifestyle.
The flower was inked at a shop called Murda Ink Tattoos, in Jamaica, New York.
Flashing forward to the Summer of 2006, Erika was having a cover-up done (see #8 and #12 below) and asked, as an afterthought, if the artist could cover the interlocking female insignia, as well. Erika's fiancee (now husband) didn't like the "advertisement" of the prior lifestyle. The leaves were added under the flower at Triple X Tattoo, now known as Red Rocket Tattoo on 46 West 36th Street in Manhattan.
Tattoo #8 was a boyfriend's name, inked along the front of her waistline, by Joe at Between the Lines. This name was covered up (see below) in 2007.
Tattoo #9 is a Chinese dragon on the middle of Erika's back. Her dress at the company holiday party afforded me a great opportunity to photograph it without her having to remove any clothing.
Joe at Between the Lines did this piece as well. Erika recalls just hanging out at Joe's shop and talking about how she wanted a big piece for her back. Joe was happy to oblige, and drew up the dragon free-hand.
She said that it took about ten weeks and three sittings to complete. The reason for the multiple sittings? The pain. To quote Erika, "I'll never forget how much that shit hurt."
The other elements of the tattoo are the kanji. When I asked Erika what they meant, she said, "Well, one of them is supposed to mean "to love life":
and the other is supposed to acknowledge that former lifestyle and say "to love women":
Erika, when she told me this, seemed to have her doubts, and was receptive to the idea of me looking into their actual meanings.
I went to my resident Chinese language expert, who quickly debunked their meanings. They do not mean what she thinks they do, he said. Because they don't make much sense. The best translation he could give was "good girl" for the top and "born/appear" for the bottom.
If you look at the kanji for "love,"
you'll notice it's not similar to any of the kanji in the tattoo.
Tattoo #10 may look familiar, as it is the first one I noticed on Erika which started out this whole business. Despite "never being crazy about tattoos on arms," Erika inked this in the Summer of 2003, while on a date. She doesn't recall the name of the shop, just that it was somewhere in the East Village. Of course, the East Village is likely one of the few places in the U.S. where tattoo/piercing shops outnumber Starbucks.
So, Erika still had a soft spot for little girl things, unicorns and fairies and such, so she designed this fairy, using several different drawings to create a composite she liked.
She designed the wings and changed the outfit color to red. Why red? As a tribute to her younger brother, who was in the Bloods, a gang whose colors are red. I, for one, appreciate the irony of a pixie sporting gang colors. This is definitely a tough, New York fairy, not some wimpy woodland nymph!
Tattoo #11 also has a pretty interesting story. Erika got married in the Spring of 2007, but she met Lance, her husband-to-be in February 2004.
They dated for a couple of weeks, but she knew he was still dating another woman. Erika thought that this other woman, who had been seeing the guy first, was going to be a problem and that, as long as she was still in the picture, their relationship wouldn't go anywhere.
Erika made a conscious decision to "steal him away" once and for all. Because he had kids from a previous relationship, she plotted to surprise him on Father's Day with a surprise trip to Florida. He had never been to South Beach in Miami and she wanted him to experience it. And so she did.
The day before they were set to return to New York, they were walking around South Beach and they stumbled upon a tattoo shop. Lance already had one small tattoo with some kanji, so Erika suggested that he go in and get a new one. The subject of tattoos had come up before (how could it not when you already had 10 pieces?), so they went in and he got a new piece on his
arm, a huge lion with a crown, representing his last name in Hindi.
It's incredibly hard to be an inked person and watch someone get a tattoo and not want one for oneself. Therefore, Erika found a piece on the wall that she liked and had it done on her back, below the bluebird, above the dragon.
Sorry, the name of the shop and the artist are not recalled.
Tattoo #12 came in the early Summer of 2006, around late June/early July. She and Lance were engaged, and she wanted to cover up the name of an ex-boyfriend tattooed across her lower abdomen.
A co-worker recommended Red Rocket Tattoo, and it was there that she had this lotus inked on her waistline:
Yep, no name anymore!
Now, for some disclosure. Erika is the first Inked Person to let me photograph her stomach for Tattoosday. I did have a mutual friend present, Sephora, who was the first person who hosted a tattoo here.
Erika wanted the lotus for two reasons. In addition to wanting something pretty to cover up an old name, she had heard that the lotus was a symbol of fertility, and she hopes to have kids some day. She hopes the lotus will be lend good luck for future procreative purposes.
There are over one hundred various types of lotus, so I can't pinpoint the exact one this is modeled after.
Once this cover-up was done, Erika asked for the leaves on the flower mentioned above to cover up the double female insignia.
Well. a hearty thanks to Erika for her participation here! She definitely holds the record for most tattoos offered up to the Tattoosday masses. Her ink is closing out the year for Tattoosday. Here's hoping that her lotus will spawn a healthy blossoming of tattoo posts here in 2008!

Weekend Babe: Beautiful Miss World Zhang Zi Lin
What a way to end 2007... with a weekend babe and she's none other than the newly crowned Miss World, Zhang Zi Lin. She attended California State University, Northridge but dropped out to seek a career acting. She worked her way up through commercials to music videos to guest roles in TV series to supporting film roles. While she has not had any lead roles, she has received attention in the supporting roles she has played. Mendes has worked in interior design and written children's books.
More:
Dropping out of school soon after being randomly discovered by an agent, Mendes appeared in a few made-for-television productions and hammed it up with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan in A Night at the Roxbury before being cast in a prominent role in Urban Legends: Final Cut. Working against typecasting despite her teen horror resumé, Mendes next took roles in Exit Wounds, Training Day, and All About the Benjamins. Mendes next began work on a children's book titled Crazy Leggs Beshee in which she wanted to introduce art, history, vocabulary, and values to children in a fun and easily comprehendable medium.
In 2003, Mendes' career took off, with the actress taking on large roles in an ecclectic quartet of high-profile films. In 2 Fast 2 Furious she played a customs agent working with Paul Walker to bring down a Miami drug cartel. Out of Time found her reteaming with Training Day costar Denzel Washington. Flexing her comedic chops, Mendes was the love interest of half a pair of conjoined twins in the Farrelly brothers' Stuck on You. And in Once Upon a Time in Mexico she played another government agent, this time opposite Johnny Depp.

Kim Kardashian
Birthday: October 21, 1980 (age 27)
Bio
Kim Kardashian stars on Keeping up with the Kardashians. The Hollywood socialite had sex with Ray J on tape and, well, sticks out her rear end a lot. That's the extent of her talent. She's a former close friend of Paris Hilton and girlfriend of Nick Cannon.
As 2007 draws to a close, it’s time to reflect and pay tribute to the stars who made this a year to remember. On that note, The Hollywood Gossip is announcing its 10 finalists for its first annual Celebrity of the Year award.
They’ve given us their best, their worst and, in a more than a few cases, their naked pictures. Now it is time for us to give a little something back with this special feature, because without these celebrities, we are nothing.
We previously profiled promiscuous drug addict Lindsay Lohan at #3. Now, without further delay, we present Celebrity of the Year finalist #2 … Kim Kardashian!
In 2007, Kardashian proved just how far a giant pair of boobs, large rear end and penchant for the spotlight can take a young lady born into millions of dollars.

Google: the chainmail version
Posted by TJ Riley, Data Center Technician
From time to time we highlight the non-work interests and pastimes of individual Googlers. - Ed.
I have been working with chainmail, and metal working in general, for nearly 5 years now. I picked it up when I started college. My first major in college was history, and I was going to focus on the Middle Ages because of my fascination with the medieval period. After I changed majors to Computer Science, my hobby remained medievalism.
I have apprenticed under a blacksmith and learned some general metal working techniques. But I could not build my own forge then, so I turned to chainmail, which is a "cold" metal craft. Now I can take a bag of rings with me anywhere I go, and any time I have free time, I can work on whatever my current project is.
The crafting of chainmail is a relatively inexpensive hobby -- for the cost of a single videogame I can have enough chainmail supplies to last me months. The best part is that is requires very little thought most of the time, so you can multitask; watch TV, or movies, or even browse the web while working on chainmail.
A while back I was wanting to try my hand a chainmail inlay, but I did not have a design in mind. Most people make a chainmail shirt that has some dragon, or rampant lion design on it. I wanted to make something more unique. After a few weeks of thinking about this, I realized that I could use the Google logo.
I started construction in late April 2007, my plan was to only work on it while on my lunch break, or other downtimes. But I soon realized it would take me years at that pace. And the opening of our new office area was going to happen later in the summer. So I began to work on it whenever I was not actually doing my job. I spent around 4 to 5 hours a day every weekday weaving the banner.
Four months later, I had a completed banner, which now hangs in our office.
For the numbers-minded, here are some details:

- The entire project is exactly 25,829 rings.
- Dimensions: 67 units by 44 units (c. 66" x 27")
- Rings: 1/4" 16-gauge aluminum; the silver is bright aluminum and the inlay uses colored anodized aluminum.
- The entire thing is the traditional 4 in 1 pattern turned 90 degrees.
