2008 Wrap-Up, Looking Ahead to 2009
The concept will be the same, but I am going to enhance it a little bit. All posts will be dated and time-stamped around the time that they happened. So, if I don't get around to posting the ink for a few days, it will be back-dated for chronological effect.
I also want to blog above and beyond the successes (i.e. the people who said "No") and expand to other tattoo-related topics, when they arise.
For example, if I stop in Borders and look at a tattoo book, I'd like to link it here. I am hoping to turn all the "no thank yous" into items of interest.
I also have a couple of new features in the works that I hope to unveil in the new year that will continue to make Tattoosday the interesting experience that I believe it is.
In an effort to start out with a clean slate, I am cleaning out my drafts and posting all the remaining drafts I have in house, including several pieces by Jessica, who I met back in June.
Once again I want to thank everyone who regularly reads Tattoosday, and those who visit once in a while. 2008 was a banner year, registering over 100,000 hits this year alone. I'm looking forward to seeing what 2009 will bring. Happy New Year!
Google blogging in 2008
This is our 368th post of the year on the main Google blog, which is 23% more than in 2007. In addition to more posts, we are thrilled to know that we have many more readers now — 78% more, to be exact. The number of unique visitors jumped from 6,738,830 last year to more than 12 million (12,000,723) in 2008. And readers are coming from all over: the UK, Canada, India, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Japan and beyond. The top non-Google referrers are Yahoo, Digg, Reddit, Lifehacker and Slashdot.
We posted quite a bit about new products (10) and new product features (56), but nothing caused as much excitement as our earlier-than-planned unveiling of Google Chrome. This post alone had 1,735,093 unique visitors and generated 12% of our total-year pageviews on the blog! There was also the much-anticipated announcement of the first Android-powered phone. And people enjoyed reading about our design philosophies. Who knew a little change to a favicon would generate such interest?
But it wasn't all just product news; there was much else to cover in 2008. To mark Google's 10th birthday, we took a moment to reflect on the enormous impact the Internet has had on people's lives since our founding. Some of our in-house experts shared their thoughts on how various technologies will evolve in the next 10 years.
Like many of you, we were on the edge of seats watching all of the U.S. election action. We posted 27 times about political subjects, providing information about voting tools, how the political process works, and what was top of mind on Election Day. It's clear that technology will be playing an even bigger role in politics in years to come.
Of course, we had some fun too: We kept our long-standing April Fools' Day tradition going with the announcement of Project Virgle; we covered new ways to get around the Googleplex and the masterminding of a giant Ferris wheel; and we raised our glass to a couple who got married with Google.
And the Google blog network keeps on growing: 44 new blogs launched this year, for a total of 127 active company blogs. A few highlights: eight new developer blogs (the Open Source blog is shining star, with 370,000 unique visitors since its start in February), and 22 new ads-related blogs, nearly half of which are in languages other than English (there are AdSense blogs in Traditional Chinese and Russian; and AdWords blogs in Danish, German, Turkish, French, Russian, Korean, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, and Spanish). There's even an Analytics blog in French. And we also welcomed three new regional blogs, for India, Africa, and the Ukraine. Sharing information with people wherever they are in whatever language they speak is a priority for us, and each of these new blogs helps us get a little bit closer to this goal. If the total number of Google blogs makes your head spin, don't worry. We've developed a new blog directory and gadget to help you more easily track news and updates from us.
We're looking forward to another robust year of keeping you informed of all the goings-on at Google. In the meantime, we wish you and yours a very happy New Year.

More of Jessica's Ink: Blue Stars and Random Art
She has inked some blue stars....
And that is Italy as well, with the red, white and green colors of the country's flag. The blue stars accompany a tomato slice and what I assume to be a Madagascar hissing cockroach...
and a koala bear.....
Thanks to Jessica for sharing all her ink here at Tattoosday.
More of Jessica: A Death's-head Hawk Moth and Knee Flames
That is the Death's-head Hawkmoth:
which came to cultural significance when featured on the movie poster for the Jodie Foster movie mentioned above.
Thanks again to Jessica for sharing her ink with us here on Tattoosday!
More of Jessica: Moogoogaipan and Red Foo
Jessica has shared a lot of ink here. She actually has some other foo dogs in an arm sleeve (shown here) which are well worth seeing again. Thanks again Jessica!

Danny Cipriani shows off his handling skills as he cavorts in the Caribbean with Kelly Brook
The 21-year-old put in a spot of body surfing with his girlfriend Kelly Brook on waves swelling just yards from their £1,000-night penthouse apartment in St Lucia.
Strictly Come Dancing star Miss Brook, who knows a thing or two about playing up for the cameras, almost seemed to treat the impromptu arrival of a photographer on the beach as a photo-opportunity as the pair frolicked the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.
The pair, who have been dating for four months, certainly seemed to be wrapped in the first flushes of young love, even though Miss Brooke is eight years older and has had a string of failed celebrity relationships.
Miss Brook left little to the imagination in a miniscule floral-print bikini. Her muscular young beau wore more conservative black Bermuda shorts.
Size-eight Miss Brook has spoken breathlessly about how she keeps such a tremendous figure, citing time spent in the bedroom with her boyfriend rather than in the gym as the secret. And it certainly seems to be paying off for her.
The couple are among scores of celebrities who have flocked to the coast and islands of the Caribbean for Christmas and New Year.
At the Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados, all the usual suspects - Simon Cowell, Philip Green and Michael Winner – are prepared for the resort’s unrivalled New Year’s Eve firework display and party.
Cowell has this year foregone the luxury of the hotel, however, in favour of an even more exclusive address – Cove Spring House, a rented estate where he is staying while his own huge estate is built nearby.
The comings and goings in Mustique might lead anyone to believe some kind of bizarre love merry-go-round was going on.
Hugh Grant and his ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley flew out to the island from Britain, though they strangely took different routes on December 10. They were spotted playing happy families with Miss Hurley’s young son Damian at the Cotton House hotel.
It would be more than a week before Liz’s husband Arun Nayar joined the party after he was held up on business.
Then, curiously, none other than Grant’s other ex-lover Jemima Khan was also spotted on a plane bound for the tiny isle on Boxing Day.
All of which of course might be a complete coincidence.
If that is the case, there might be some awkward moments when they do bump into one another on the isle, which is less than two miles long, has just 100 private residences, and only three places to get a drink after dark.
Meanwhile, higher up on the hedonism scale, Amy Winehouse has been thrilling the locals of St Lucia with her topless frolicks in the surf while Lily Allen has been pictured holidaying with her mother in Jamaica.
Daniel Craig has been showing off a slightly softer but no less impressive washboard stomach on the beaches on St Barts. He is joined on the island by Eddie Murphy among other US celebrities.
But some of America’s biggest celebrations tonight are planned in nearby Miami.
Topping the bill at the city’s fashionable South Beach this year is a party thrown by Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan, who is hosting a a colossal drum and bass-themed bash at the exclusive Mansion nightclub with DJ girlfriend Samantha Ronson.
Tickets are a cool £4,000 for a table in the VIP area.
Actor Hugh Jackman – recently hailed the world’s sexiest man - is hosting New Year’s Eve celebrations at the nearby Raleigh boutique hotel.
At the Fontainebleau Hotel, the New Year is welcomed with an impressive line-up of singers, rappers and actors.
P Diddy is headlining at the achingly fashionable LIV nightclub there, while Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine will be crooning poolside. Tickets are £200 each.
Billie Piper has been living it up at another of South Beach’s famously fashionable venues, The Shore Club, alongside new baby Winston James and husband Laurence Fox.
It’s thought the family will ring in the New Year at the hotel’s Skybar, in the company of US actress Kristin Cavallari, Twilight star Kellan Lutz and Sopranos actor Robert Iler. Rapper Pras, of The Fugees, is also set to perform at the oceanfront venue on the big night.
However, Miss Piper’s clan were perhaps a little crestfallen at their choice of hotel last night. The pair were spotted by a team of paparazzi photographers on the first day of their holiday at the Shore Club, after which they have been virtual prisoners in their hotel. Sadly, the hotel itself is hardly conducive to restful times for their baby. The resort is a hedonists’ paradise with dance music blaring into the early hours,
Miss Piper was spotted doing laps of the hotel well after dark with her little son in her arms trying to usher him to sleep.
Other hip-hop heavyweights such as T.I. are heading to the newly-opened Gansevoort South Hotel for its first ever New Year.
Counting down at the rooftop bar will be actress Chloe Sevigny, as well as a smattering of models and rappers.
Party-goers will shell out a £150 entrance fee, and the dress code is Miami Vice Chic.
Hip-hop heavyweights The Roots will entertain the crowd at the Delano Hotel's Florida Room, while soul singer Janelle Monáe will belt out her tunes in a poolside performance.
Over at Privé, the festivities will take on a more relaxed feel with the vocals of multi-platinum singer-songwriter John Legend.
Billie Piper settles into motherhood on relaxing Miami break with baby Winston
But Billie Piper only had eyes for her sleepy two-month-old son.
The actress spent the afternoon on a Miami beach enjoying baby Winston.
She gazed down at him as he lay on her lap, stretching his fat little arms in the warmth.
Miss Piper, 26, and husband Laurence Fox, 30, have been holidaying in the U.S. ahead of their first wedding anniversary on New Year's Eve.
An onlooker said: 'She looked relaxed, content and just generally very happy. Billie clearly adores her son.'
The pair are staying at the prestigious Shore Club hotel in Miami Beach.
They the afternoon on a public beach, ordering only soft drinks from the bar. Fox attempted to read and sunbathe, while Piper relaxed in the shade and cradled the child, who was wrapped in a sarong.
But the couple shared equally their parenting roles.
Mr Fox was very hands on changing nappies on the beach and taking their baby into sea.
Winston has only been seen a handful of times in public since he was born after a gruelling 26 hour labour by Caesarean section at the private Portland Hospital in London on October 21.
But despite yesterday's scenes Billie's stay surely won't be all about the family.
The hotel is described as 'party central' at this time of year, charging a minimum of £450 a night. On New year's Eve it will see US rap mogul P Diddy will host one of the biggest parties in America.
All day yesterday he entertained his guests by sending fleets of bi-planes soaring above with a picture of him on a banner and the words 'I Am The King'.
Intriguingly however, Miss Piper has given fellow celebrity hotel guest Charlotte Church a wide berth.
Miss Church was seen yesterday parading around the Shore Club with a gaggle of girlfriends and without her partner, rugby star Gavin Hensen, or their children.
Billie, the star of ITV's Secret Diary Of A Call Girl has said she plans to take a break from acting to concentrate on her family.
But in recent months she has been tipped to become the first female Time Lord in Doctor Who, after lead David Tennant revealed he was quitting at the end of 2009.
Piper was a huge hit with fans and critics when she played the Doctor's assistant Rose Tyler when the show was revived for modern audiences in 2005.
Tennant has given her his influential seal of approval and because the role is not free for another year, this could give Piper the time she needs to spend with her family.
Asked if Miss Piper could take on the role, he said a female Doctor was a distinct possibility.
'Why not?' he said. 'It's one of those parts any actor could bring something valid to, because it can be anything and it's a blank canvas every time.
Tennant will leave after completing four special episodes of Doctor Who to air next year.
Executives are looking for a new Time Lord for the fifth series, scheduled to broadcast in 2010.
