3rd Avenue Festival, Bay Ridge

On Sunday, September 30, the community of Bay Ridge held its annual Third Avenue Festival. Every Fall, there's a street fair on 3rd and every Spring, one on 5th Avenue.

The weather was beautiful and there was a plethora of tattoos, as I had anticipated. I had kids in tow, however, and despite their appreciation of body art, I have found myself less inclined to approach people when they are around.

Nonetheless, as people familiar with New York street fairs know, the kids love the big, inflatable bouncy rides. You know, when they jump around with a bunch of other kids on a huge inflatable pad, surrounded by netting and inflatable walls.

Thanks to their love of such attractions and the leniency of the operator, the kids had unlimited fun in the hour or two we spent at the festival, and I got to talk tattoo.

I am proud to report that I met and spoke with seven different folks who agreed to let me photograph their ink and get a little history of the work gracing their flesh.

In fact, until post-street fair, when I asked a guy in Foodtown about his shoulder piece, and was rebuffed, I was batting a thousand, 7 for 7.

So, thanks to all my inked volunteers. Due to space constraints and time as well, I'm going to roll them out gradually, a day at a time. Unless, I find more cool tattoos this week and start to further backlog. Oh, to have such problems!

Enough of the talk, here we go.....

The first piece is a classic koi tattoo, done on the front of the calf. There is a dragon on the back of the leg but it is not finished yet, as color still needs to be added.

The host, John, is from the Bay Ridge area and had his koi inked at Body Art Studios on 3rd Avenue. We know the artist, Peter Cavorsi, who also runs the shop, because he is responsible for one of mine and three of my wife's pieces. I strongly recommend his shop if you live in southwest Brooklyn. His shop is clean and he does very nice work, as you can see from John's koi.

Koi are a traditional part of Japanese tattoo, and are very common subjects n body art because they represent good fortune. Despite their being regular subjects, they seldom are ever one in the same. Like snowflakes, they tend to differ from body to body, and unlike tribal pieces, I don't think I could ever get bored of koi tattoos.

John estimated that this large leg piece, including the dragon on the back of the leg, not pictured and not yet colored, took 13 hours so far. A lot of people don't realize how much time goes into elaborate pieces like these. On shows like Miami Ink, a ten-hour project can be compressed to five minutes of screen time.

Thanks to John for getting me off to a great start at the Third Avenue Festival! Tune back throughout the week to see the tattoos on Tracy, another guy named John, Jaimie, Helen, Chris and Lolita Ford.

Happy October!

Kate Moss engages to new beau

Brit supermodel Kate Moss has reportedly informed her Primrose pals that she is engaged to new beau James Hince.

Moss, who hooked up with the musician only a month ago, sent the message to her close friends after a 12 hour romp with Hince.

"I love Jamie so much - we're engaged," the Mirror quoted Moss, as saying.

However, her friends say that the engagement is not formal, and that Moss is just expressing her love for Hince.

A friend said that the 34-year-old is sending out a clear message to ex flame Pete Doherty that she is really happy.

"Kate and Jamie had been together all night and day until 5pm and when they surfaced Kate told her friends that she and Jamie were engaged", a pal said.

"No one thinks they are actually going to walk down the aisle any time soon - they know it was Kate's way of saying she's serious about him."

"Everyone knows it's a message to Pete too, telling him she's moved on and is happy with her new man."

Jolie, Aniston Share title of Most Powerful Actress

Hollywood actresses Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston now have more than Brad Pitt in common after both were entitled "most powerful actress" in the Guinness Book of World Records, according to media report Sunday.

Officials for the 2007 edition of the records book came to the decision after assessing the earning power of several celebrities and the publicity surrounding them.

Jolie, 32, has been under the spotlight for her ever-growing family and relationship with boyfriend, Aniston's ex-hubby Pitt.

She also attracted huge media attention for a potential Oscar nomination for her leading role in "A Mighty Heart," in which she played the wife of the slain journalist Daniel Pearl.

The former "Friends" star Aniston, 38, has generated headlines around the world for her rocky love life -- falling in love with Vince Vaughn while shooting "The Break Up," and a romance with British model Paul Sculfor.

This year's Guinness World Records book also sees Hollywood star Tom Cruise knock Johnny Depp off the top spot to regain his crown as "most powerful actor." Cruise took the title thanks to his earnings from "War of the Worlds. "

"He also loves soccer and swimming. He seems to be into everything at the moment!"

Penny also revealed she and Rod have made a pact to never spend more than two weeks apart, and she has started turning down work to spend time with her family.

She said: "My priority is to be with my family. I've started looking around for schools for Alastair - we are looking at schools in America and England, so wherever we are he will have a place of education."

Fight Night with Nicky and Bijou?

It’s so hard to keep up with the feuding that goes on in Young Hollywood these days.

Case in point-Nicky Hilton and Bijou Phillips.

What's the latest on those two?

At last night’s opening of the Intermix boutique on Robertson Boulevard, Phillips apparently wasn’t too keen on hanging with the hotel heiress.

A source tells me a television reporter asked Hilton and Phillips to do an interview together. Phillips turned him down with a grimace. She shook her head and said, "Nope. Those are the rules," reports an onlooker.

Fortunately, it didn’t spoil the evening. They both headed inside for the bash, where E! Online’s Hollywood Party Girl reports she saw the ladies actually hanging out and chatting it up.

Is there a feud simmering, or are there some new red carpet rules I don't know about? Whatever.

Chris Brown's Rihanna Lust

The hip-hop star - who worked with the stunning singer on her hit single 'Umbrella' -is keen to take their friendship further.

He told America's Us Weekly magazine: "I've known Rihanna for years and I might have flirted with her a little bit at the MTV Video Music Awards.

"We're just friends. We're great friends. We haven't taken it to that next level YET.

"I'm single and ready to mingle."

However, Chris may have competition for Rihanna's affections.

Last month, it was claimed she is dating 'Transformers' star Shia LaBeouf.

Isla Fisher's Action Ban

Pregnant Isla Fisher was banned from doing stunts in her new film 'Hot Rod'.

The Australian actress wasn't even allowed to film a scene where she was standing on a moped, because the crew were worried something could go wrong with her pregnancy.

She said: "They wouldn't even let me do that one scene where you see me standing on the moped. They only let me do the drive up and the turn, and then the stuntwoman took over. At least, I hope it was a woman in a red wig, but it may have been a man!"

The 31-year-old star - who is expecting a baby with her fiancé, Sacha Baron Cohen - also explained why she tried to keep the pregnancy a secret.

She told Britain's The Independent newspaper: "In the beginning, I dodged the rumours. I was trying not to be rude, but there's a time before you're sure everything is all right with no complications that you just don't want to discuss it."

Mary Mcdonnell Granted Restraining Order Against Stalker.

Actress MARY McDONNELL has been granted a restraining order against a stalker after the crazed fan posted photographs of the star's children online.

McDonnell, who plays President Laura Roslin on cult TV show Battlestar Galactica, obtained the cease-and-desist order from a California court earlier this week (ends28Sep07) after images of her kids Olivia and Michael appeared on an internet fan forum, reports PageSix.com.

The stalker, from Kansas City, Missouri, posted the pictures online using the screen name 'peakeana'.

One student who attends Brandeis University near Boston, Massachusetts, says: "I have personally seen this woman following Mary McDonnell around on campus."

McDonnell, who is married to actor Randle Mell, has yet to release a comment.

Farrah Fawcett's Cancer Treatment

Farrah Fawcett has flown to Germany to receive "alternative cancer treatments".

The former 'Charlie's Angels' star - who was told her cancer of the lower intestine had returned in May - made the decision to travel to Frankfurt after being told the treatment she wanted wasn't available in the US.

A spokeswoman for Frankfurt's University Clinic said: "I can confirm that Farrah Fawcett was here and was treated here, but I have no more information."

Farrah's close friend Craig Nevius said: "She was declared 100 per cent cancer free and then it came back. She was discouraged by the treatments she got here. The fact that it recurred after all that she went through was heartbreaking.

"She has been in Germany getting alternative treatments not allowed in the US."

Nevius also revealed Fawcett, 60, is filming her cancer battle for a possible documentary.

He said: "She's been documenting everything in a video diary for what could be a very important documentary."

Rad Tattoos from Nebraska

There are no defined rules for asking folks to volunteer for Tattoosday, but I have alluded to some personal guidelines, like the reluctance to interrupt people who are talking, or my tendency to select individuals who are stationary and generally alone. I have also said I will not follow people. Too creepy, generally speaking.

However, when something spectacular presents itself, all bets are off.

Friday morning, around 11:30 am, I was facing North on the southwest corner of 34th Street and 6th Avenue, on the outskirts of Herald Square, when I saw a heavily-tattooed woman across the street, walking with a guy, heading West. When the light changed, I had already decided to go take a closer look.

About half-way down the block, in front of Macy's, I caught up and without hesitation, tapped her on the shoulder and interupted her discussion with her companion. What inspired me to such boldness? Why this, dear readers:

Although not a completely finished back piece, it was breathtaking, especially if one admires quality ink. Click on the photo to enlarge. She also had tattoos running on both arms as well, neither of which I photographed.

I did my basic introduction and she was immediately receptive. Her name was Jill and she hailed from Nebraska.

After agreeing to participate, I asked her to offer me a piece that she felt most sentimental about. She had a hard time answering. I elaborated, "What one do you have the best memories about?" She selected the one I would least likely have chosen, but I was thankful that she was letting me add her to Tattoosday.

At the top of her right foot, at the bottom of the leg, she had the word "Rad" tattooed.

Jill explained that she and five friends had gone out together and each had a word inscribed on them permanently. The memory of the event clearly had an impact on her. When I asked "Why RAD?" She shrugged, "It's just a word I liked. One of my other friends had gnarly tattooed on her neck."

The tattoo was done in Omaha, Nebraska at Liquid Courage Tattoo and Piercing by the artist Jason Brown.

She said technically she only had 6 tattoos in all. She counted her 2 sleeves as one apiece. And I'm guessing she counted the back as one whole as well, despite the many components.

Well, I didn't want to take up too much of her time, standing in the sidewalk. In fact, while chatting with her, a couple stopped and the woman complimented her on her tattoos. With art like this, I'd imagine she gets that a ton!

I asked if I could take a shot of her back, she agreed. I thanked her and ambled off. I did notice when I uploaded the photo to the home computer later that the back piece still needs a little coloring which might be why she didn't offer it up right away as the tattoo I should photograph.

Of course, I want to dwell on the back a little longer. The script states "Traveler to the Grave".
I will take a stab at interpretation and attribute it as a reference to the lyrics of "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?", a song from Morrissey's 2004 album You Are the Quarry:

But even I, As sick as I am, I would never be you
Even I, As sick as I am, I would never be you
Even I, Sick and depraved, A traveler to the grave
I would never be you, I would never be you

I also love the image on the neck, which is traditionally known as a calavera, attributed to the Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead in Latin American cultures.

The heart on the left side of the back is, I am surmising, a tribute to her grandfather. The strap of Jill's top covers up the first date partially, but I am leaning toward 1927-2004 as the span at the bottom of the heart.

Thanks to Jill for so kindly sharing her art with me! If you're reading this, Jill, and feel like sending me any shots of your sleeves, feel free to e-mail me. I hope you had a wonderful trip to New York City. Thanks for brightening my day!

Kimberly Stewart's revealing night at a Playboy party

Kimberly Stewart may have been almost falling out of her dress, but she managed to fit right in a party held by Playboy last night.

The model worked a very busty blonde look as she arrived at London's Sketch nightclub in a plunging v-neck black dress.

The daughter of rocker Rod Stewart famously had her breast implants removed, so her ample - if a little uneven - cleavage is likely thanks to a push-up bra.

Playing up: the model worked the camera in an all black outfit

Kimberly had an enlargement at 18, but decided to return to her natural state - and rather curiously gave the lumps of silicone to her friend Jack Osbourne as a gift.

She said: "I gave him my implants, I framed them and I signed them and I engraved them and he has them on his bathroom wall.

Hello boys! Even Kimberly looks rather surprised at her buxom look

At the time, Rod encouraged her decision to take them out. She recalls: "He's very supportive of whatever I do. He was just like, 'If you don't feel comfortable, if you don't feel safe, just get them removed.'"

Meanwhile, a host of other guests arrived ready for fun at the Playboy store launch event, including reality TV star Danielle Lloyd, model Leah Wood and singer Lily Allen.
