The plastic surgeon told his pregnant wife that he couldn't wait to see her and was excited about their baby scan.
However just minutes later the 43-year-old collapsed on the doorstep of the couple's west London home.
A heavily pregnant Natascha McElhone arriving at her London home
McElhone, 36, is expecting her third child at the end of this month after her husband's sudden death.
She told the Sunday Times: 'He left me this message, full of the joys . . . he couldn’t wait to come out the next week, he was so excited about the scan, so excited about the baby.'
She added: 'Thank God, a lovely last message.'
Kelly, a 43-year-old specialist known for his work on celebrity noses, was found collapsed in the hall of his £2.5million townhouse in London, just after performing a late-night operation.
The surgeon's mobile phone was locked meaning nobody could access any of his numbers.
McElhone was filming in Los Angeles and was unaware of what had happened until she got a message from her husband’s friend Neil Randhawa.

She said: 'I walked across the road towards my trailer and it must have suddenly hit me on some level. I did that thing I thought people only did in movies - I dropped the phone and my knees sort of buckled under me.
'A lovely woman called Nancy, who is David Duchovny’s assistant, ran up to me. I told her the boys were over in the gym and asked her to fetch them. I got into my trailer and called Neil again.
'I knew I was going to have to tell the kids. I thought of trying to suspend time or wait and not tell them for a day but I couldn’t bear the idea of other people knowing and them not.
'I remember looking out of the window and seeing them chasing after each other with huge squeals of delight and thinking, ‘I’m about to shatter their world.’
'They came in and they were like little boys are, full of energy and excitement, and I told them what had happened. And then the clouds descended . . . it was awful.'
However McElhone remains optimistic about the future and said the couple's sons, Theodore, eight and Otis, five, keep her going.
She said: 'Martin is really, really present, which I’m surprised by and delighted by.
'I’ve never been one to believe in spirits, but I feel we’re all suffused with him in different ways and that will live on, in me, in the kids, in this new little one that’s just coming along.'
Police said Mr Kelly had died as a result of 'dilated cardiomyopathy', where the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood efficiently.
In most cases the cause is unknown but the British Heart Foundation said that some cases are triggered by a viral infection.
The surgeon and the actress were about to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary and had known each other since they were teenagers.
